UAS devices are not allowed on campus unless you get prior authorization from JMU Police/Safety.


The use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) or drones without express prior authorization is prohibited on James Madison University property. Operators without prior authorization or in violation of relevant laws and regulations will be subject to trespass from University property and/or University sanctions.

James Madison University is developing a comprehensive policy for UAS operations. To use a UAS for any purpose, operators must first contact James Madison University Police to get authorization. Currently, authorization for UAS operation will only be granted for official University business with proper FAA authorization and FAA licensure.

Providing a safe work and school environment, as well as ensuring the privacy of our community members and guests, is our utmost priority. If you see any unusual activity on campus involving a UAS, contact James Madison University Police immediately at (540) 568-6912.
