USFS Siuslaw NF includes Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Drone use over the dunes is restricted to designated areas due to nesting Western snowy plovers (threatened) and dense recreational OHV traffic.

Western snowy plover nesting closures apply to drone overflights from March 15 - September 15 annually along the dunes shoreline.

Airspace / Site Context

  • Oregon Dunes NRA is the largest coastal sand dune system in North America (40+ miles long)
  • USFS has demarcated plover closure zones with GPS coordinates updated each spring; drone entry triggers ESA Section 9 take concern
  • North Bend/Coos Bay (OTH) Class D is ~10 NM south of the dunes; Florence area is Class G

  • Download current plover nesting closure GPS boundaries from USFS Reedsport Ranger District before flying March 15 - September 15
  • Outside nesting season and outside closures: no USFS permit required for recreational UAS
