Seven Wilderness Areas (Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Three Sisters, Waldo Lake, Diamond Peak, Bull of the Woods, Menagerie) ban drones.

Airspace / Site Context

  • Three Sisters Wilderness is Oregon's most-visited wilderness; drone citations have occurred at the parking trailheads
  • Fire season TFRs (June-October) are issued with 24-48 hours notice; UAS flights during active fire TFRs risk mid-air collision with air tankers
  • Eugene Airport (EUG) Class C is ~35 NM west; Portland Hillsboro (HIO) is ~80 NM north

Key Rules

  • Check FAA TFR viewer daily during fire season before flying anywhere in the Cascades
  • Fire suppression aircraft have priority in all TFR zones -- drone operators are liable for delays or hazards
