Before
After
Santa Maria Airport (SBSM), located in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, operates under a unique shared-governance model. The passenger terminal and civil infrastructure are managed municipally, while the airfield itself directly shares its runways and airspace with the Santa Maria Air Force Base (BASM), one of the Brazilian Air Force's (FAB) most critical strategic military installations. Because of this dual nature, the airspace experiences highly diverse and unpredictable traffic. It accommodates scheduled commercial turboprops, regional executive flights, and extensive military operations—including low-altitude fighter jet maneuvers, tactical cargo transport, and military helicopter training. Additionally, local flight schools conduct frequent pilot training patterns over the area. Any uncoordinated drone activity within this highly monitored sector poses an immediate, severe hazard to national security and flight safety. Spontaneous or recreational drone flights within the airfield perimeter or its active traffic funnels are completely banned under federal law (Brazilian Penal Code, Art. 261). Regulatory Authorities: DECEA, ANAC, Brazilian Air Force (FAB), and the Municipal Administration of Santa Maria. Primary Framework: ICA 100-40 (DECEA) and Article 261 of the Brazilian Penal Code. Flight Planning Portal: Highly restricted military-civilian shared airspace grids and geofencing zones are managed via SARPAS NG and Aisweb.
