Drone Rules for Vernam Field Air Strip
Vernamfield is a former military airfield in Clarendon that is currently inactive as a commercial airport. While the site is not presently operated as a public aerodrome, pilots should exercise caution due to ongoing redevelopment plans, organized events, and potential future aviation activities.
Vernamfield (formerly Vernam Air Force Base) is a historic airfield located in Clarendon Parish. The airfield ceased aviation operations in 1949 and has remained inactive for decades. Portions of the former runway system are currently used for motorsports and other organized events.
The Government of Jamaica and the Airports Authority of Jamaica have announced plans to rehabilitate and redevelop Vernamfield through the Vernamfield Lite Project and longer-term aerodrome initiatives. These plans include restoring aviation capability and developing aviation-related infrastructure.
Drone operators should:
Verify whether special events are taking place at the site. Avoid flights over crowds and organized gatherings. Follow all applicable JCAA drone regulations. Check for any updated aviation restrictions before flight.
Because Vernamfield is undergoing planning and redevelopment activities, future restrictions may change as aviation operations are reintroduced.
