Porto Alegre International Airport (SBPA), managed by Fraport Brasil, is the primary aviation hub for the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It handles an intense volume of domestic passenger jets, international flights, and heavy cargo aircraft.

The airport is heavily integrated into the urban fabric of Porto Alegre and is bordered by major highways and the Guaíba Lake. Because commercial airliners operate at very low altitudes directly over dense residential neighborhoods, commercial sectors, and transit corridors during their final landing approaches and initial climb phases, any uncoordinated drone activity creates an immediate risk of a catastrophic mid-air collision. Consequently, spontaneous or recreational drone flights within the airfield perimeter, its active traffic circuits, or its approach funnels are completely banned under federal law (Brazilian Penal Code, Art. 261).
