Drone Rules for Praia da Joatinga
Open with Limitations (No Coordination Required up to 40 meters / 130 feet) Praia da Joatinga (Rio de Janeiro, RJ) is located within the open regulatory airspace under DECEA's ICA 100-40 framework. Drone operations are permitted without prior DECEA coordination, provided the flight remains at or below 40 meters.
Praia da Joatinga is an ultra-niche, highly exclusive, and tiny beach hidden inside a private residential gated community in the Joá neighborhood, nestled between São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca. Measuring less than 300 meters in length, this wild slice of coast is framed by towering cliff walls, premium architecture, and massive rock formations. Because it sits entirely clear of the immediate restrictive approach zones for nearby airports, it qualifies under standard low-altitude airspace rules, removing the need for pre-scheduled flight windows.
However, the physical constraints of Joatinga demand exceptional piloting care. The beach area is completely dependent on the ocean tide; during high tide, the water can swallow the entire strip of sand, leaving nowhere to legally or safely launch or land your aircraft. Furthermore, because the usable beach area is so small, maintaining ANAC's mandatory 30-meter (100-foot) horizontal buffer from non-consenting individuals can be almost impossible on weekends when surfers and locals gather. The steep cliffs framing the cove also pose a risk for sudden wind shear and can block line-of-sight satellite reception, meaning you must keep your drone under close visual contact (VLOS) and avoid flying too close to the rock faces.
