Location & Land OwnershipLand Manager: Greater Sydney Parklands (GSP).Legal Authority: Enforced under the Greater Sydney Parklands Trust Regulation. Operating a drone here without written consent is an official park offense. 🛑 Ground Rules & RestrictionsRecreational Flight Status: 🔴 Strictly Prohibited. Hobbyists and recreational pilots cannot launch, land, or operate a drone anywhere within the park boundaries.Sub-250g Allowance: ❌ None. The weight of the drone does not matter. Micro-drones (like the DJI Mini series) are completely banned for recreational use.Commercial Flight Status: ⚠️ Generally Not Permitted. Greater Sydney Parklands explicitly notes that drone filming is heavily restricted. In rare cases where an exceptional commercial permit is granted, operators must possess a valid RePL and ReOC (the sub-2kg commercial exemption is explicitly rejected by GSP). 🦅 Local Environmental & Safety HazardsGrey-Headed Flying-Fox Colony: Parramatta Park is home to a permanent, federally protected colony of endangered bats. Any drone operation near them requires a formal Threatened Species Licence (Biodiversity Conservation Licence) from the NSW government. Heliport Proximity: The park sits dangerously close to the Westmead Hospital Heliport flight paths. Emergency medical helicopters frequently fly low over this area, requiring immediate grounding of any aircraft.Trees as Obstacles: GSP rules strictly state that drones must maintain a 30-meter exclusion zone not just from people and buildings, but explicitly from trees to protect local bird life and canopy ecosystems.
